Spring Is Here. Your Body Is Still Catching Up.

In Minnesota, spring is a season of quiet tension. Outside, we see the ice retreating from the lakes and the first scent of earth rising through the frost. Inside our own bodies, a similar shift is happening.

This is the time of the Wood Element, where the Liver energy is at its peak. This energy is powerful, upward-reaching, and expansive. But when this Wood energy dominates too strongly, it can overwhelm us—often showing up as that familiar "spring cough" or a sense of inner irritability.

To find our equilibrium, we must look to the Metal Element—the energy of the Lungs. The Lungs provide the boundary and the strength needed to guide the Liver's growth.

Strengthening the Breath

In our colder climate, our lungs have spent months breathing the dry, heavy air of winter. To support them now is to support your entire transition into the light.

  • The Power of the Exhale: Practice slow, belly breathing. Focus especially on long, intentional exhalations. This simple act strengthens the Lung Qi and creates a steady anchor for the rising energy of the season.

  • Gentle Movement: As the ground softens, let your body soften too. A quiet walk, a Qigong flow, or light exercise until a gentle sweat breaks helps move the stagnation of winter out of your system.

  • The Wisdom of Spice and White: Nourish your Lungs with the colors and flavors of the season. Incorporate "white" foods like pears, daikon radishes, and white mushrooms to soothe the system. Add mild spices—ginger, garlic, and green onions—to act as a spark, helping your energy circulate freely.

  • Protecting the Gateway: The Minnesota wind is deceptive. Even as the sun warms the air, the "Wind Gate" at the base of your neck remains vulnerable. Keep your neck and upper back covered to protect your internal peace from the sudden spring chill.

Finding Your Rhythm

As we move deeper into the season, remember to increase your time outdoors gradually. The transition from the deep cold to the vibrant spring is a journey, not a race.
